You need to choose the right GPLPV drivers!
0.11.0.213 has been smooth sailing so far and is working fine on 2008R2.
On 0.11.0.188 (only 0.11.x I've tried) to install the drivers requires some Voodoo. I run the driver install and wait until the progress bar is at 100%. Then I use the icon in the notifcation try that indicates that windows should reboot because of new updates to tell it to reboot. Once that goes it wants to stop the GPLPV install, let it do it. Reboot, BSOD, reboot again and choose to boot in Safe Mode. This will finish the driver install. Reboot again, now you can do the install again without a problem (and get things like the shutdown monitor). This has been successful on 2008 32 and 64 bit -- the rest is as below...
Nothing too exciting to report here. For the most part just use the Typical install. Go ahead and tell the thing "Yes" when it bitches about the Authenticode. When you get "New Hardware Found" dialogs, just let those sit around. Instead of doing anything with those, just keep hitting the "Continue Anyway" button that Microsoft has so wonderfully taught all of us to ignore. After a bunch of those, your "New Hardware Found" dialogs will go away and you'll be presented with the option to reboot -- that is a good idea.
On XP, the "Continue Anyway" button didn't appear for me, so I had to tell the "New Hardware Found" dialog that it should not use the web to update the driver, that it should automatically install from its local driver store, and that it was okay that it didn't work right and that it shouldn't bother me about that driver again. Once it went through that a bunch of times, it got to the reboot option, and, after the reboot it was fine.
When installing x64 2008/Vista/7 you need to turn test signing on and be sure to use at least 0.10.0.130. Do this from an Administrative Command Prompt to be safe:
bcdedit /set testsigning on
*YOU MUST REBOOT BEFORE INSTALLING THE DRIVERS!*
When installing the drivers, be sure to get the cert installed too...
